1. Preparing to Start

The process of creating a mould will take about 30 minutes.

Prepare an area to perform the moulding and casting.

Practice the pose that you wish to cast.

2. Making the Mould

Measure 2 litres (2 qt. / 3.7oz) of 25C (77F) water and pour into moulding bucket.

You can apply a light coat of baby oil or petroleum jelly to your hands to make it easier to release the mould.

Empy the bag of alginate powder into the water - you have approx. 2mins - 2mins 30secs to mix and coat your hands before it sets.

Stir for approx. 90secs with a large spoon or hand mixer.

Cover your hands in the alginate mixture, take no more than 20secs.

Insert your hands into the bucket in the desired pose without touching the sides or bottom.

Wait for the mixture to set after 3-10mins, it should feel like rubber.

Carefully remove hands one at a time.

Clean mould by swilling fresh water into it, and ensure all water is drained afterwards.

For best results, move onto the next step right away but mould can be refrigerated for 24hrs with lid on.

3. Making the Cast

Set aside 1tbsp of casting powder for touchups.

Make sure you're wearing the protective gloves and face mask.

Measures 0.6 litres of 25C (77F) water and pour into a bowl.

Empt the casting powder into the mixing bowl, you have 102mins before it sets.

Let it sit for 30secs to absorb the water.

Using a gloved hand, mix together until it feels like paint, do not mix longer than 2mins.

Tip the bucket to a 45 degree angle, pour a quarter of the mixture into the mould, rotating the bucket while tilted to ensure it gets into all spaces.

Repeat task until mould cavity is full.

Once full, tap and shake the bucket gently until the mixture sets.

Dispose of any excess mixture in the bin, do not put it down the drain/sink.

Wait for the cast to harden for a minimum of 2hrs, but no longer than 4hrs.

4. Removing the Cast

Turn the bucket upside down, pushing and pulling on the sides to break suction.

Carefully peel the alginate mould away from the cast.

Once the majority of the mould has been removed, use the sculpting tool to remove the excess alginate from recesses and crevices.

Any voids caused by air bubbles can be filled with the small amount of casting powder set aside in Step 3, let it dry for 1hr.

Rinse with clean, cool water and set aside to cure.

5. Finishing Touches

Allow the cast to cure for 7 days in a well-ventilated area, until it is dry and no longer cool to the touch.

You may want to sand your cast once dry, using the sandpaper to remove any imperfections.

Blow off any dust, debris or remaining mixture - it is now ready to paint.

Let the casting dry for 5 days in a well-ventilated area after painting.
